Default Teak Furniture

We received some teak deck chairs that are fabulous, but starting to look, well, a but sun-worn. Should I be oiling them? How often? Any ideas out there?

Hi there,

I bought some outdoor teak furniture from Outdoor Furniture & here is the pic & of course, I had the same problem with the top of the table due to sun exposure, but I bought a teak care kit & some teak oil, which was kind of expensive, but it does work.

Hope that helps!

Call me crazy but doesn't the beauty of teak come out when it does get sun worn? It looks very beachy. I'd be afraid to oil and then invite friends to recline for fear of ruining their clothes !

Same here. That's my way of thinking too. So, we are both crazy for that? C'mon.

Teak oil dries to a protective finish. It is not oily. You can apply it with a pad similar to the scrubber side of a sponge. The pad buffs in the oil nicely.

Before you apply teak oil be sure to clean the wood with a proper wash. Ask a marine supplier near you.

In Japan they might refer to the wear as wabi-sabi. It is a natural patina from use and nature that gives character to an object. Teak ages beautifully.

Many old wooden boats have seasoned teak decks. The matte finish of the deck to the shine of the varnished rails and interiors is a nice contrast.

I inherited a backyard set that was pretty mildewy/moldy and bleached it with deck wash. I then rubbed in a coat of oil for peace of mind because I was a little afraid that the wash might have been too harsh for the wood. It looks beautiful. Instead of an old wooden boat feel it has a luxury yacht presence. Both looks are great. You just have to decide what best defines your style.

Cool Re: Teak Furniture

Dear All,

I have bought an amazing beautiful teak seat from Vintage Country Hills (vintagecountryhills.com) and it looks like premium teak but I have seen in many forums speaking about teak oil.

My furniture is golden color and should last long time, why do I need to apply teak oil?

Is it really necessary to apply teak Oil on Premium Teak Grade A. The company that I bought from says their product just requires to clean not to oil it.

Can you advise?

Left untreated, teak will fade to a natural, gray color. If this is what you want the furniture to do, periodically wash it down with soap and water to keep dirt from discoloring the wood as it ages. To keep it looking new, a UV inhibiter must be applied. In the past, oil was used. This is not the optimal product, as it was in fact the constant sanding and re-applying of the oil wich kept the wood looking fresh. Also, as the oil is a natural product, it can decay, and cause mildew buildup in the grain of the wood. The best products available currently are teak sealers, with a pigment used as a UV block. A company called Semco makes a very easy to use product, available in several colors. This company is where I have bought it in the past, and they have the best prices I could find. http://www.regencyteak.com/ACCESSORIES23/Semco-Teak-Cleaners-and-Preservatives/

What kind of wood is commonly used in USA? What's the better wood recognized there?

Do people still like the antique furniture?

Default Teak Furniture

I have teak outdoor furniture and when it gets weathered and turns gray, bees like to eat the surface of the wood. I was wondering is there was a solution that could be sprayed on the furniture that would repel the bees.
